Death is a Scarlet Poppy
- Colin Mason An Historical Novel of Laos
This historical novel is based on first-hand observations by the author of the terrible exploitation of the Hmong people of Laos, who live in the mountains and grow opium. During the Vietnam War the Hmong were forcibly recruited by the communist Pathet Lao to fight the Americans, and also recruited by the Americans to fight the communists. Many of their villages were destroyed by American bombs and their houses and people set on fire by napalm dropped from American helicopters. Their history has been largely overlooked until now, but it is a compelling story this book tells of the destruction of the traditional way of life of a warm and likeable people. Conclusions can be drawn from this tale about the futility of America’s present-day wars overseas and the desolation they may cause.
